Rapid City Construction of GF&P Complete
October 12, 2011The Outdoor Campus West in the Black Hills of South Dakota is now open. The 33-acre site on the northwest side of Rapid City will offer dozens of indoor and outdoor education classes to the public.
The Campus will feature indoor exhibits, classroom space available to GF&P and outside groups, and several meeting areas. A huge freshwater aquarium adorns the south end of the building and is one of many educational features. The outdoor portion of the campus features miles of hiking trails, wetlands’ hardwood and coniferous trees, two ponds, grass meadows, an archery range, and a tree house. These features are all part of the wide variety of educational opportunities free to the public.
Governor Dennis Daugaard helped opening ceremonies of the Campus and praised its completion. Opening a facility of this caliber using tax dollars might have been a tough sell, he said. “I can turn to taxpayers and say there were no general state tax dollars spent on this, and more than $1.2 million was from private donations.” The bulk of the funds came from selling hunting and fishing licenses in the state. “When you think about South Dakota, we are one vast outdoor campus,” said Gov. Daugaard.
This project is one of J. Scull Construction’s most unique projects in Western South Dakota. The facility took expert planning and a lot of ingenuity to complete. The Rapid City General Contractor was on hand at the opening ceremonies, and received much praise for getting the project complete.
